Television Pledge Drive – Georgia Public Broadcasting

The mission of Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is to create, produce and distribute high quality programs and services that educate, inform and entertain audiences and enrich the quality of their lives.  GPB's nine public television stations deliver quality PBS and locally produced programming to every county in Georgia, and to significant portions of surrounding states.  Since 1984, GPB’s listener-supported, 15-station public radio network has been Georgia's source for great music and National Public Radio (NPR) news.  AGA members will volunteer their time during GPB’s television pledge drive.  We will answer phones and take pledges when viewers call to give their support.   This has been a fun and successful event in years past and GPB has come to count on AGA to participate in this annual fundraiser.  And it’s great for AGA visibility as we wear our AGA tee shirts.  The date and time of our shift will be determined at a later date.

APRIL 2008

MS Walk – The Multiple Sclerosis Society

The MS Walk is sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  We will be volunteering with the Georgia Chapter for their 2008 MS Walk at the Piedmont Park location.  This is one of the major fund raisers for the year and helps raise thousands of dollars for research on this devastating disease.  AGA members will be volunteering their time at the registration desk or at rest stops along the route.  The date, time, and actual volunteer duties will be determined at a later date.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree

The Salvation Army Angel Tree is the largest Christmas assistance program in Atlanta and assisted over 27,000 needy children and senior citizens in 2006.  AGA members adopted a specific child or senior angel from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program for the holiday season and bought gifts for them, which were delivered to the charity.  We received age and size information, along with some general guidelines for selecting gifts for children and senior citizens.  By contributing to this worthy cause, we  partnered with the Salvation Army to bring joy to those who would otherwise have nothing on Christmas.

Partnership Against Domestic Violence

The Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV), the largest nonprofit domestic violence organization in Georgia, provides professional, compassionate, caring and empowering support to battered women and their children in metro Atlanta.  PADV supports women and their children in their efforts to live violence free by offering shelter and services to families, as well as educating the public.  Their programs include a 24-hour crisis line, two emergency shelters, parenting groups, children and youth programs, community based and transitional services, legal advocacy, community support groups, welfare assistance, and counseling.  PADV’s Face to Face program surgically repairs facial and dental deformities that are a result of domestic abuse. In conjunction with counseling, domestic violence survivors who need facial plastic and reconstructive surgery will receive treatment at no cost helping to heal their psychological and physical scars.  PADV also offers programs to educate police officers, judges, hospitals, businesses, legislators, child protection agencies, clergy, schools, the business community, and media about the issue of domestic violence and the toll it exacts on society.  AGA members will collect and donate items on the charity’s wish list, such as toiletries, children’s clothing, cell phones, etc.

Spellbound – The Literacy Volunteers of America’s Annual Scrabble Tournament

The Literacy Volunteers of America – Metro Atlanta (“LVA-MA”) provides free, confidential tutoring to adults who read below a fifth grade level and to recent immigrants who need help with survival-level conversational English.  In addition to one-on-one tutoring, the LVA-MA has a family literacy program that targets parents of pre-school children to help break the cycle of illiteracy in Atlanta.  The LVA-MA provides these services with the help of a dedicated network of volunteers who work one-on-one with students in need.  All proceeds from the event and auction benefit the programs of LVA-MA.  AGA members volunteered their time to keep score for the tournament.  The tournament is held each year to raise money and awareness of LVA.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program is the largest Christmas assistance program in Atlanta and assisted over 27,000 needy children and senior citizens in 2005.   We provided a monetary gift to the Salvation Army for the angels that didn’t get adopted. The Salvation Army used the monetary gifts to purchase Christmas gifts for a mix of angels – both children and senior citizens.  AGA members chose the gender of the unadopted angel they want their contributions to go to.  We arranged for several convenient drop-off points to collect the monetary gifts. By contributing to this worthy cause, we partnered with the Salvation Army to bring joy to those who would otherwise have nothing on Christmas.
